Critical Literacy for young children:

Dr. Seuss and his book series !!

  1. Can we still use his books?
  2. How can we be able to use them?
  3. Should we go back & censor what needs to be blocked? -Children will still have access to the internet outside of school and these types of things can pop up.
Have all kinds of books for your classroom
Be open/close minded?
It really depends on yourself if you wish to teach certain topics to the children because in the end they will always hear what you try and prevent them from.

When would it be age appropriate for the students to learn about race?

Circular Inquiry 3-5 Process-
Building background knowledge & Curiosity
Choosing book & forming groups  [Building their literature books]
First group meeting [students discuss books & generate questions]
Reflecting on collaborating
Looking for BIG questions [teacher helps develop questions]
Onward to investigation
Planning to share their learning
Rehearsal/Presentations

*To maximize students' content area learning
-asking questions of the other students

Circles allow the students to come up with their own topics and questions to explore....this happens because of reading non-fiction.

Evaluate the validity, reliability & usefulness of the information

Work with others to leverage your thinking
Apply the knowledge to your own life
Share your new learning with others

A big impact was brought to my attention about Dr. Seuss's article about racial biases that research shows at the age of 3 children being to form, and by age 7 those biases become fixed.
